What is the role?
The Electronics and Software Test Engineer supports the planning, development, execution, and documentation of electronics and software testing throughout the product development lifecycle, working under appropriate technical guidance and escalating risks, failures, and decisions beyond assigned authority.
What are the key responsibilities?
• Test planning: Define hardware and software verification and validation scope and activities from approved requirements; contribute estimates and schedule inputs; identify risks and regulatory considerations; and maintain traceability aligned with project objectives.
• Test development: Develop suitable test methods, fixtures, scripts, and protocols for hardware, embedded software, and complete hardware–software systems.
• Test execution: Execute approved test protocols for electronic hardware, embedded software, and complete hardware–software systems. Record objective evidence, investigate failures and nonconformities, and confirm compliance with defined technical and functional requirements.
• Documentation: Prepare and maintain test plans, protocols, fixture specifications, configuration details, test records, and reports that ensure full requirement traceability, reproducible test methods, and appropriate objective evidence. Use approved AI tools for data analysis and report writing while independently verifying the output.
• Collaboration: Collaborate as a member of a cross-functional team within R&D, Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, Sales, and Marketing functions through the product development lifecycle from concept to commercialization.
• Regulatory compliance: Assist in ensuring that hardware, software, and complete-system verification and validation activities comply with relevant medical device regulations, standards, and guidance documents.
• User engagement: Engage with clinicians and product users in their clinical setting to elicit user needs and functional requirements when required.
• Continuous improvement: Stay current with industry trends, technologies, standards, regulations, and guidance relevant to medical-device verification and validation. Contribute to team improvements by evaluating tools, techniques, and methodologies for testing, automation, and data analysis.
• Professional development: Pursue relevant internal and external training to strengthen capability. Seek appropriate guidance from team members.
• Perform other assigned tasks as directed by your manager.
What education and experience are required?
• Bachelor of Engineering/Science in Electronic/Software/Biomedical or equivalent.
• A minimum of one year of experience testing electronic hardware, or embedded software, or complete hardware–software systems, preferably within the medical device industry.
What key skills will make you great at the role?
• Ability to develop and maintain test software and automation scripts using one or more relevant programming languages, such as C, C++, Python, or JavaScript.
• Working knowledge of standards and guidance documents relevant to the verification and validation of medical electrical equipment and medical device software is desirable:
• IEC/EN60601 Medical electrical equipment – Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance
• IEC/EN62304 Medical Device Software – Software Lifecycle Processes
• FDA Guidance Documentation
• Experience supporting embedded-software verification through test-case development, protocol execution, defect reporting, and requirements traceability for medical electrical equipment is desirable.
• Familiarity with electronics hardware validation, including schematic review, component- and board-level testing, fault isolation, and test methodologies for microcontrollers and embedded devices, is desirable.
• Familiarity with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and tools used to test wireless communication modules.
• Working knowledge of source-control and issue-tracking tools, such as Git and JIRA, and familiarity with requirements or test-management tools used to maintain traceability, test status, and defect records.
• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
• Self-directed with effective time-management skills and willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing project requirements.
