What is the role?
This is a critical field based role for Aerogen acting as the non-promotional scientific and medical lead for Aerogen with key external stakeholders including HCPs/payors/regulators, ensuring the effective and appropriate utilization of our existing and new product portfolio including supporting the generation of and communication of scientific medical evidence. In addition, the MSL role plays an important one in providing insight and training support for internal stakeholders. Given Aerogen’s unique technology and strong clinical differentiation the MSL plays a particularly important role in Aerogen’s development as it moves beyond the device engineering, technical performance and equipment integration activity to one which is increasingly being recognized as having the potential to be standard of care across the critical care continuum from ICU through to homecare and long term ventilation. The MSL is expected to be able to act effectively and operate remotely including taking initiative and drive execution without daily supervision. Likewise, the MSL is a core part of the wider global Medical Affairs Team, the overall Aerogen global business and a critical member of the national/regional cross functional team where effective collaboration and alignment of focus and priorities across teams is fundamental.
What are the key responsibilities?
Medical Affairs Strategy Development & Execution:
• Working with the global Medical Affairs team and aligning with other functional stakeholders including Commercial Territory teams the MSL is responsible to develop an annual medical territory / regional strategic and operational plan (MSOP).
• The MSOP should reflect the integration and leverage of the global medical affairs strategy (top down) with the local bottom up country/region specific local strategy execution plan and implementation.
• The MSOP should include a clear quarterly breakdown of strategy and activities including KPIs and allocation of time and budget investment.
KOL engagement & relationship management:
• Identify and proactively engage to develop and maintain meaningful professional relationships with KOL HCPs incl representatives of Professional Specialty Society Groups/ in the respiratory field focused on physicians (pulmonologists/intensivists/respiratory specialist) including supporting request for information/materials and evidence and logistic support, including Advisory Board management, enabling engagement and support for:
• selective and strategically relevant new evidence /data generation
• peer to peer meeting support / education and training including symposia, workshops, stand alone meetings and events including webinars.
• involvement in and development of relevant regional, national and local guidelines, consensus and local protocols.
• support for further educational cascade and science exchange across the wider non KOL HCP community
Scientific Exchange:
• Developing and executing an effective medical and science communication cascade including the development of panels of HCP speakers who are credible and able to lead evidence based discussions on disease state, science exchange and relevant aerosol nebulization pros/cons and comparative product information through peer-to-peer interactions.
• To work with selected KOL HCPs speakers in the development of content and materials for high interest and interactive science exchange including where needed support for speaker training and presentation skills development.
• To personally lead regular national and local medical science exchange programmes including education and training of HCPs at workshops / stand alone / smaller group and one to one meetings.
• To act as the local medical representative handling requests for information and queries relating to off label usage of Aerogen’s products
• To act as the Aerogen scientific and medical representative in Payor/Managed care discussions including the regional;/national/local, purchasing/formulary decision-makers and government/corporate institutional accounts when needed.
• To work with national and local professional groups and support relevant CME accreditation for Aerogen education and inclusion into undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes.
• To consistently collaborate with the regional/national/local Commercial Team in supporting and delivering medical/science content and in Commercial led speaker and educational events.
Supporting Evidence Generation and Science Collaboration:
• To collaborate with selected regional and national KOLs in aligning strategically valued evidence generation plan & develop proposals for regional/national research roadmap including appropriate research methodologies including potential RCT / RWE / IIT / Surveys.
• Based on regional/national proposals engage global team and align regional/national evidence research plan with global programme and given agreement and priority progress development of plan including protocol development with KOL HCP research teams.
• Support as necessary local research logistics including funding approval, ethical approval documentation and product trial materials provision.
• In line with approved evidence roadmap ensure effective local study support as appropriate including core compliance with regulatory guidelines.
• Collaborate with global evidence programme lead and clinical team to support effective timely study reporting followed by drafting of abstracts and manuscripts to encourage the rapid publication of study outcomes in peer-reviewed literature and onward inclusion in wider evidence dissemination.
Effective Training, Insights and Competitive Intelligence:
• Ensure effective training and support for internal teams incl commercial sales team on latest medical science evidence and management of customer queries.
• Routinely collect and provide medical insights and feedback gathered from the scientific exchange and communicate relevant information to internal stakeholders to define, update, and support current product strategies and NPD development.
• Attend relevant National, Regional and Local conferences supporting medical/science activities at conferences along with KOL / HCP engagement and providing high quality feedback on key trends, new evidence and competitive insights.
Innovation:
• In line with Aerogen’s Values of Ambition and Innovation proactively seek to look for new ways to increase the effectiveness and impact of MSL customer engagement activities including, but not only, identifying and act as local leadership of local project initiatives e.g. professional society development / workshop simulations.
Collaboration:
• Collaborating as part of global Medical Affairs team engaging in sharing best practices across colleagues and adopting new ways of working shown to be effective when shared by others,
• To ensure effective management reporting and collaboration across Medical Affairs Team and other functions including Commercial with regular reporting of activity using Pulse tools aligned to key KPIs along with and current / planned allocation of time and priorities in and monthly quarterly activity plans.
Compliance:
• To Complete all required training, documentation, expense reporting, and other administrative responsibilities and ensuring appropriate compliance in line with internal/external policies.
• Ensure compliance with all Aerogen internal policies and external regulatory compliance requirements.
• Maintaining scientific expertise and awareness of relevant disease area, product / device development, new evidence, consensus and guideline research and literature and regulatory development.
• To review, as appropriate and by exception where there is locally developed promotional material and ensure relevance and regulatory suitability for usage by Aerogen stakeholders including commercial teams.
What education and experience are required?
• Minimum of MSc however advanced scientific training and academic credentials generally consisting of PhD, MD, Pharm D preferred.
• Seniors will typically have 2-4 years of experience as an MSL, preferably in the respiratory field.
• Strong knowledge of respiratory diseases, treatments, and the medical device industry.

• Excellent presentation skills. Ability to clearly and convincingly communicate new ideas, concepts, issues, and successes.
• For this geographical region, proficiency in English is required, and bilingual skills in both English and Spanish are preferred.
• Meticulous attention to detail in the creation and examination of clinical and scientific documentation.
• Ability to be conversant with analytical models and correlate experimental to theoretical results.
• Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to continually demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy.
• Good computer skills. Experienced with Microsoft Office applications for generating office documents, presentations, spreadsheets, etc.
• Ability to work independently and cross-functionally within the context of multidisciplinary external and internal teams.
Advantageous:
• Clinical experience in situations where direct/or indirect decision-making authority for patient care was demonstrated (e.g., direct patient care, treatment protocol development, therapy guidelines development, traditional clinical practice settings) or medical liaison experience.
• Assisted in writing, submission, and subsequent publication of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts.
• Scientific publication(s) in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.
• Presentations at national and international conferences.
• Experience in designing and monitoring investigator-initiated clinical trials.
• Conversant with Good Clinical Practice.
