Dr Ronan MacLoughlin, Senior Scientist at Aerogen Ltd the creator of the revolutionary aerosol generation, unique vibrating mesh technology for improved drug delivery via nebulisation, based in Galway, Ireland, was a key speaker on behalf of Aerogen Ltd at the Second Galenus Workshop on the 18th-20th September. This was an exciting workshop focusing on pulmonary drug delivery, hosted at Trinity College Dublin, primarily sponsored by The Galenus Foundation and also supported by Aerogen Ltd.
Pulmonary drug delivery is a critical issue for many people suffering from; Asthma, Idopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Currently the WHO estimates that there are over 235 million asthmatics worldwide. More than 70,000 people in the US and EU suffer from IPF and drug sales in this area are estimated to rise 87% a year between now and 2017. The WHO also estimates that by 2030 COPD will be the third leading cause of death worldwide.
